Who was Richard Stanton and why is Parlour Group dedicating a restaurant in his name?

Parlour Group‘s latest venture, Stanton & Co. is set to be a 300-seater restaurant in the heart of Rosebery. Located in the revived warehouse of The Cannery, Stanton & Co. will combine the quirky vibe of New York’s Meatpacking district, with a menu that showcases the finer points of modern Australian cuisine.

However, who was Richard Stanton and why is Parlour Group dedicating their latest venue to his name?

The legend 

Richard Patrick Joseph Stanton, aka Richard Stanton, was an auctioneer and real estate agent who migrated to Australia from Ireland in the late 1800s.

The son of a police officer, turned real estate agent and furniture dealer, Richard took over the family business, Stanton & Son, after his father’s untimely death in 1889.

Soon after, Stanton became Ashfield’s alderman, and later mayor, before marrying Florence Beatrice Nicholls, the daughter of an accountant.

Together with the Nichols family, Stanton took the leap into land purchase. The industrialisation of Rosebery soon followed. Like Haberfield, Rosebery was designed as a ‘garden suburb’, which later became a trademark of Stanton’s.

Stanton moved on to establish the Real Estate Auctioneers and Agents’ Association of New South Wales, travelled the world — particularly North America — in search of inspiration. He is credited with bringing the California bungalow style of housing to Australia that is prevalent throughout Rosebery.

Due to Stanton’s natural inclination towards ingenuity, he was known for keeping one step ahead of his competitors – a spirit that is worthy of honour.

The honour

Stanton’s story is synonymous to that of the experiences of Parlour Group Founder, Brody Peterson.  

After migrating from Canada, Brody decided to take on the Australian business sector with an approach that was similar to Stanton’s. His endeavours were heavily influenced by North America and, due to Parlour Group’s unique approach to hospitality, Brody is able to stay one step ahead of his competitors.

One unique difference between the two is that, while Stanton dedicated his life to creating ‘new’, Brody aims to protect the rich history of his venues, which is why the old Cannery became the perfect space for a new venture.

Steeped in heritage, The Cannery site was formerly part of the model industrial suburb (Rosebery) created by John Sulman and developed by Stanton and Sons between 1911 and 1920. It was later the Sydney factory for the Cyclone Fence and Gate Co., one of the major Australian producers of welded wire and steel gates and products originating in the late 1930s.

Now, with Parlour Group leading its emancipation, it will become the site of a lavish restaurant dedicated to the original pioneer of Rosebery, Richard Stanton.
