Cass Greaves and The Ragin Cajuns label themselves as Gritty, Swampy & Dirty.
See Cass & The Ragin’ Cajuns live at Surly’s every Saturday night, from 7pm, starting from the 29th of July.
Their music is steeped in delta blues and N’awlins 2nd line grooves, we speak to the lovely Cass Greaves whose voice sings soulful tunes straight out of the bayou.
Cass Greaves (CG): “A gentleman approached me at a gig the other day and described my voice as part Nina Simone, part Tom waits with a dash of Amy Winehouse.”
Who are your influences?
CG: “Growing up my nonno (grandad) was always playing me Nat King Cole and Ray Charles… But for me now the “Blues-ier” the better. “Some big influences now are Big Mama Thornton, Muddy Waters, Nina Simone, Dr John, All of the Cats from New Orleans and one of our home-grown amazing talents CW Stoneking.”
Do you have any upcoming releases?
CG: With over a year since the release of her first album “He’s Whiskey in a Teacup”, Cass says she’s, “starting to get the writers Itch. “It’s been just over a year since I released the First Album so I’m heading back to New Orleans next year… the plan is to record the second album while I’m over there. I have just started writing some new tunes and hope to release an EP by the end of the year here.”
Why are you excited about your upcoming residency at Surly’s American BBQ, Burgers & Beer?
CG: “Well, firstly I get to play the music I love in an epic venue/bar. It’s soooo cool and vibin’ and reminds exactly of being back in New Orleans or Nashville. Plus, the Philly Cheese Steak is delicious! “Secondly, I think there is a major lack of representation for artists who transcend the pigeon holes the Australian music scene has created. Surly’s has opened its doors to showcase something a little different to your average pub scene and I’m so thankful to them for giving us the opportunity to spread the blues love and sound.”
